Researcher Identifiers

Develop and use your ORCID

After adding your ORCID to Research Profiles and Repository, populate your profile with information about you and your research activities to make it useful.

Develop your profile
  1. Ensure the visibility is set to Everyone. You can hide individual records if needed
  2. Complete the biography, education and employment sections to build your ORCID profile
  3. Under Also known as add all variations of your name
  4. Under Country add countries in which you have undertaken research
  5. Under Keywords add keywords that describe your research
  6. Add relevant links under Websites, including your Research Profile, Google Scholar profile page, personal research blog or social media channels you use for research.

What to include in your research profile

Include measures of quality and esteem in the profiles that allow you to do so. In particular, consider what is deemed as 'quality' within your field. Examples include:

  • peer-reviewing
  • awards and prizes
  • international engagement
  • research grants
Add works to your ORCID record
Note: The maximum number of works you can add to your ORCID record is 10,000
Direct import from other systems

You can use the Search & link wizard to add other works to your ORCID record by direct import from other systems. Watch this video on Using the Search & Link Wizard to Import Works (Vimeo, 1m51s).

  • You must first grant access to the organisation (go to the end of this list for available search & link wizards)

  • Use the dropdown list to select the platform from which you want to import your works. You will be prompted to grant access to your ORCID record. You will then be taken to the member's website to select the works to add to your ORCID record

Works added with a Search and Link Wizard will display the relevant organisation as the source of the item and you as the source of the connection between that item and your record. This will display as “[researcher name] via [wizard name]”

Auto-update your publication list
(recommended)

Auto-update your publication list by granting each of your Trusted parties permission to interact with your iD and record)

  • Crossref permissions - The Crossref auto-update process is granted from a message within your ORCID Inbox. The request is sent to your ORCID Inbox after a publisher submits a new work to Crossref, with your ORCID iD embedded in the metadata. (Tip: make sure your ORCID ID is added to manuscripts submitted to publishers)
  • DataCite permissions - To benefit from ORCID auto-update, you must also enable auto-update in your personal DataCite profile. Sign in using ORCID. Follow the prompts to authorise Globus (DataCite) and complete your sign up to Globus (DataCite). Once the connection is enabled, and whenever a data center submits a new work to DataCite, which has your ORCID iD embedded in the work metadata, DataCite will automatically add it to your ORCID record.

Verify on the ORCID site under Trusted partners that you have Globus Auth as a Trusted organisation.

Dryad Digital Repository
  • Sign in to your ORCID record. Go to Membership and Service
  • Choose the +Add symbol
  • Start typing 'Dryad Digital Repository' then select it when it displays in your search box.
  • Scroll down to click on 'Save'.
  • On the Dryad site, click to Login
  • Click on the ORCID account login button to connect this account with your ORCID so you can start adding datasets
Web of Science permissions
  • Sign in to the Web of Science platform. Navigate to your Profile Account settings. Go to the Connected accounts tab and find the option to Connect your ORCID. Press the button to authenticate your ORCID to Clarivate. When prompted, Authorise access to Clarivate.

Verify on the ORCID site under Trusted partners that you have Clarivate as a Trusted organization.

  • Your account sign in and security changes will apply across Clarivate products, and your ORCID iD will appear in your Web of Science Author Profile.
In ORCID

To verify you have granted permission to each of these Trusted parties, log into your ORCID record. At the top of the page, click on [YOUR NAME] and select Trusted parties. You should now see a list of your Trusted organizations.

Dimensions
  • Click on your user profile in Dimensions
  • Select Connect with ORCID and follow the instructions
BibTeX file You can export a BibTeX file of research outputs from your ResearchDirect profile and import this into your ORCID manually
Peer review activity Add your peer review activities by synchronising your ORCID profile and Web of Science Author Profile account (see the next section)
Funding information Import funding information using the Search & link Uberwizard

Note: Publication records added from Crossref, DataCite or Scopus via the Search & link wizards will be automatically added to ResearchDirect.

Manually adding publication data is the least preferred method of populating ORCID. Manually added records or those added via BibTeX import will NOT be imported to ResearchDirect.

When to use your ORCID

Include your ORCID iD when you:

  • Submit manuscripts — publishers are adding ORCIDs of contributors to a publication's metadata, correctly attributing your work to you
  • Apply for funding — the Australian Research Council (ARC) has ORCID integrated into the grant submission workflow. Other funding bodies, including the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the US National Institutes of Health and the Wellcome Trust, are requesting ORCIDs from grant applicants
  • Accept peer review assignments — you can be acknowledged for your contribution to the research community
  • Renew professional memberships — organisations are increasingly using ORCID to help link and disambiguate members' identity
  • Create your poster presentations — get your QR Code for your ORCID and include it on your poster
  • Communicate with colleagues — add your ORCID to your email signature or business card
Tips for managing your ORCID profile
  • Regularly check for accuracy and currency
  • Link all of your profiles together
  • Only share information that you can legally disclose to others
