Western Open Books is an alternative to commercial textbooks publishing that supports WSU academic authors to create and publish open textbooks that are easily written to local contexts, inclusive of local and minority voices and a diversity of viewpoints, for use in the curriculum or microcredentials, and available free to students.

In addition, Western Open Books:

  • Provides a platform for academic authors to publish openly licensed content to support the University’s Sustainable Development Goals
  • enables academic authors to update their book immediately and easily, add rich multimedia and interactivity, and co-create content with students.
  • enables the publishing of novel subjects not found in other textbooks.
  • reaches a wider readership beyond academia.

Western Open Books is a member of the CAUL Open Educational Resources Collective, which includes Communities of Practice for WSU academic authors and library staff interested in open publishing.

For further information, contact your School Librarian and browse the Western Open Books Catalogue.
