The Immaterial Made Tangible exhibition showcases a selection of creative works from the One Great Sentence and Black Out Poetry initiatives, created in collaboration with the Library Student Partners.

Throughout the past few months, we have collected One Great Sentence and Blackout Poetry submissions from across all Western Sydney University campus libraries. Many students’ creativity will be on display at the Immaterial Made Tangible exhibition in Penrith Library.

What is the One Great Sentence Initiative?

“One Great Sentence” is an initiative created in collaboration with the Library Student Partners. This initiative sought to elevate everyday words as creations and invite reflection. Members of the Western Sydney University community were encouraged to submit their favourite “one great sentence”.

At some campuses these were typed using manual typewriters, others were submitted online or via pen and paper. Participants had the option to submit their sentence anonymously or with their name attached. The results were thought provoking, inspiring and touching.

What is Blackout Poetry?

The Blackout Poetry is an initiative created in collaboration with the Library Student Partners.

Students were provided with passages from classical or well-known texts. Black markers were used to black out any words to be excluded, creating a poem or prose from the remainder. Poems were displayed in the campus libraries.

Markers could also be used in decorative ways to complement or frame the poem. Many poems were submitted anonymously, however some included the author’s name.

Come and view this exhibition in person at the Penrith Library Ground Floor, situated behind the service desk and near the lifts. This exhibition runs from 21st October – 19th December. Check the Penrith opening hours here.
