ACU and Western join forces for Open Access week

International Open Access Week 23 – 29 October 2023

We are thrilled to announce that Western Sydney University Library and Australian Catholic University have established a cross-institution collaboration for Open Access Week 2023 and will be providing five key presentations to connect and inform our vibrant research communities.

HDR Candidates, Researchers at all career levels and academic staff are encouraged to attend. Events will be held on Zoom with a presentation, leaving adequate time for discussion and Q&A.

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to engage with your peers in Research at these cross-institution events running 23-27 October.

Creating your Researcher Profile

Monday 23 October, 2023 12.00 – 1.00pm

To kickstart Open Access Week, we are holding a Researcher Profile training session.

Are you a seasoned researcher, an early, mid-career researcher or just starting your HDR candidacy? You will need a strong researcher profile to avoid author ambiguity and to make your research output more 'discoverable'.  If you want to create a Google Scholar profile, Orcid ID and sync your publications in Scopus to your Oricid ID, then this session is for you!

  • Using Research Identifiers to ensure the seamless, long-term access to research outputs and researchers

Community over Commercialisation and the impact of AI

Join our copyright gurus Vanessa Tuckfield, Copyright Manager, ACU Library and Frank Hill, University Copyright Officer, WSU in this joint presentation.

As artificial intelligence becomes all pervasive this session will look at current AI happenings regarding copyright and then discuss the possible impact they could have on research publishing.

We will explore just how important community ownership of knowledge maybe into the future.

  • Discussion around text and data mining for training AI’s
  • Discussion on some of the current court cases and AI, particularly ownership of AI produced works.
  • Discussion on the corporatisation of knowledge.

 

Research Data Management

Open research data accelerates the discovery and dissemination of research findings, provides improved confidence in the supported research publications, and contributes to discipline and public knowledge. To achieve the profile, citation, collaboration, and contribution benefits of open research data, researchers can plan to align their projects with the FAIR and CARE data principles.

We will take advantage of the opportunity to talk through open access considerations for research data in an institutional partnership project.

This session examines the importance of using a strategic approach for publishing to maximise research impact and support your career goals.

Join Lucy Walton, Scholarly Publishing Consultant, WSU Library and Sharon Lind, Senior Librarian, Research Services, ACU Library in this joint presentation.

Sharon and Lucy will discuss the ‘5-steps’ approach to strategic scholarly publishing that will help you develop a publishing plan.

  • THINK about criteria to help you select the most suitable publishing outlets for your research
  • CHECK the quality of selected publishing sources to find the most impactful for your research
  • SUBMIT your research which is aligned with publishing guidelines
  • PROMOTE your research at three stages during the project lifecycle
  • TRACK your publications and evaluate your publishing decisions
